With the rise in popularity of digital platforms, it has not only become easier to stay in touch with your existing network but also to build new connections. As the business world is shifting towards online mediums to interact and foster professional relationships, it’s imperative to build a virtual network. It may look like an easy task but it can also be intimidating or discouraging.
The following are five ways you can build your network online and add value to your interactions:
Join online communities and attend virtual events
One great way to network is by joining online communities and being an active participant in discussions and virtual events. There are a number of community groups on Facebook and LinkedIn from all sorts of niches. Many of these groups hold live seminars, insight forums, podcasts etc. that can be a great opportunity to reach out to and connect with peers. Make sure you join a group that is relevant for you and be actively involved.
Be vocal! Comment, share and give your opinion.
Sometimes without realizing it, we’re mindlessly scrolling through our timelines. Don’t! Especially on LinkedIn. Be mindful and look out for opportunities to chime in! Spend time interacting on content posted by your network, thought leaders and influencers. Like, comment or share a suggestion to ensure that they know you’re active and paying attention. However, make sure all your interactions are meaningful and add value to the overall conversation.
Give referrals (to get some in return)
A little give and take can go a long way. Do not shy away from giving referrals and shoutouts to other people and businesses. It’s always good to give more than you receive, so be selfless! It can help you stay top of mind for your network and at the very least build a good repo with the person or business. Eventually, you may even be able to ask them to return the favor!
Nail your introduction
Keep your introduction short and sweet! Focus on building a relationship rather than just overloading them with information about you. Your main goal is to get a reply back. Focus on highlighting something that mutually benefits both of you. Make sure the beginning of your introduction is interesting and you’re adding some value by messaging them.
Put your work out there
Keep your personal feed on social networks active by sharing your work, opinions and inspirations. This helps your network get an idea of what you’re up to and what kind of work you’re doing. This can help establish credibility, start conversations and build relationships with your network.
